Sympathy
Words of Comfort

If it’s the first time sending a sympathy card or gift, you might wonder what sympathy words of comfort to include. You can follow certain guidelines to send a message that acknowledges someone’s grief or loss without adding more pain.

Choose Your Words of Comfort Carefully

When a death or loss has occurred, it's important to choose your sympathy words of comfort carefully. While the circumstances of a death might not be dwelled upon, the loss has to be acknowledged. Simply saying, “I am sorry to hear about the loss of your loved one,” can give a brief message of your sympathy.

Without acknowledging the death or loss, many people feel they are unable to broach the subject themselves. Connecting to others in times of pain can be one way to open the dialogue to share more.

Express Your Feelings

When sending a letter of condolence or a comfort box, it's appropriate to express your heart’s sympathy and remember the occasions in life that made this person special to others. Appreciating the qualities that endeared us to the deceased or reminiscing about a meaningful occurrence in life are very beneficial for sympathy words of comfort.

  • When a person is ill, expressions of good wishes and hopes for a speedy recovery should be added.

  • Let the person know that you are there for them when they are well and when they are sick.

  • Offer to do something for them that they might not be able to do themselves while they are in the hospital or ill. Make the offer specific and then follow through.

Add Inspirational and Devotional Passages

  • If the recipient of the sympathy card or box is a religious person, including a devotional passage can be very inspiring and meaningful for someone undergoing a life challenge.

  • If they are not religious, you can add inspirational poems or messages from popular authors or poets who will lift the spirit of the survivors or someone who is ill or in need of some cheer.

  • If you are unsure what to select that might be uplifting, you can buy a comfort basket which includes a book to heal the soul. It will not only provide some relief when they get the basket, but they will also have something to occupy their mind later, when everyone is gone.

When surrounding loved ones have gone back to their daily lives, it's a particularly tough time for those who are trying to cope. A phone call, visit, or written words of encouragement are necessities to help deal with a loss or an illness. Sympathy words of comfort should be heartfelt and genuine.
